On August 27 and 28, 2026, a Nuevo León delegation led by Governor Samuel García traveled through Austin, San Antonio and Laredo. He was joined by Secretary of Economy Betsabé Rocha Nieto, the Sub-secretary of Investment, Innovation and Artificial Intelligence (SIIIA), Emmanuel Loo, and members of the Nuevo León Council.
According to the state's official bulletin, the purpose was to attract foreign direct investment and strengthen collaboration with Texas on competitiveness, supply chains, infrastructure, energy and talent development.
The Austin agenda
The first stop was a meeting between the Nuevo León Council and Opportunity Austin, the Texas capital's regional economic development alliance. A working session with the Texas Business Leadership Council followed. Both centered on the sectors where the two economies complement each other, among them semiconductors, energy, advanced manufacturing and specialized talent.
The NADBank Summit and a meeting with GE Vernova
In San Antonio, the delegation met with Mayor Gina Ortiz Jones, and the agenda included signing a memorandum of understanding with Tech Bloc San Antonio, the organization representing the city's tech sector.
The governor also delivered a keynote at the 2026 NADBank Summit, the North American Development Bank's annual gathering. His presentation, "Nuevo León, the Leader of Foreign Direct Investment and Infrastructure in Mexico", laid out the integration of the corridor linking Monterrey with Laredo, San Antonio, Houston and Dallas.
There was also a session with GE Vernova executives, a few months after the company completed the purchase of the remaining 50 percent of Prolec GE for US$5,275 million. That deal, closed on February 2, 2026, gave it control of the transformer plant in Apodaca, and the conversation focused on growing that operation and the state's electrical industry.
Two new bridges for the Colombia-Laredo crossing
The most concrete announcement came at the close of the tour, in Laredo. Nuevo León and Texas plan two new international bridges at the Colombia-Laredo crossing, with an investment of US$200 million funded in equal parts by both states. Construction is scheduled to begin in May 2027, and the goal is for the border port to surpass 15,000 daily crossings by 2030.
The project builds on the modernization already completed at that customs facility, which doubled its lanes. The same event brought announcements of the expansion of State Highway 001 North and the promotion of the Plan México Industrial Pole in Anáhuac, with tax incentives for companies that set up in the zone.
What is announced and what is already operating
A distinction worth making. The modernized Colombia customs facility and the widened highway that feeds it are already operating. The two new bridges, the 001 North expansion and the Anáhuac industrial pole are announced projects, with bridge construction expected to start in May 2027.
Why it matters if you invest here
Texas is Nuevo León's main trading partner and the natural destination for its manufacturing, as shown by the electrical equipment supply chain the state exports north. Every additional lane and bridge at Colombia-Laredo cuts crossing times for plants operating in the state.
